Bio
Multi-instrumentalist C. Keith Collins holds degrees in music education, German, and bassoon performance, and also holds the first doctorate awarded in historical bassoon performance. His graduate work was done at Indiana University's Early Music Institute, where he studied with Michael McCraw. He regularly performs on historical bassoons, recorder, and early harps. As a bassoonist, he can be heard in performances and/or recordings with Tafelmusik, Atlanta Baroque Orchestra, Publick Musick, Arion Orchestre Baroque, Baroque Chamber Orchestra of Colorado, Apollo's Fire, Washington Bach Consort, National Gallery Chamber Players, Musik Ekklesia, and many others. He is a founding member of the award-winning shawm and dulcian band Ensemble Lipzodes, which specializes in the music of colonial Latin America. He has been a writer for the NPR early music radio show "Harmonia".
Keith is adjunct instructor of early winds at the University of North Texas in Denton. He has also taught at Indiana University's summer Recorder Academy for young people, and at the Tafelmusik Baroque Summer Institute in Toronto.
As a traditional musician, Keith plays the music of his native Appalachia on fretless banjos and Appalachian dulcimers, and is keenly interested in the solo ballad and shape-note tradition. He is the former music specialist at Conner Prairie Living History Museum in Fishers, Indiana.
Keith apprenticed to Dan Speer of Argent Fox Harps, where he made a Gaelic wire-strung harp based on the 15th-century "Queen Mary" harp. He is particularly interested in the ceol mor ("big music") tradition of Gaelic Ireland and Scotland. He also built a 16th century style German bray harp. As a harper, he has played at the Bloomington Early Music Festival, White River Folk Festival, and others.
